Membership

Seven members are appointed by the governor as follows:

    a. Two licensed cosmetologists, one of whom is recommended by a professional association of cosmetologists, nail technicians and estheticians

    b. One licensed instructor teaching at a public cosmetology school

    c. One licensed instructor teaching at a private cosmetology school

    d. One licensed esthetician

    e. One licensed nail technician

    f. One public member, as defined in 214.02


All licensed members must have at least five years of experience in the licensed occupation immediately prior to their appointment.

Entity Powers and Duties, Activity Summary
The Board of Cosmetology is a proactive and innovative state agency that is fortunate to work with a creative profession. The Board's core mission is to constantly strive to serve and care for our licensees, applicants, and the public by being committed to public protection, superior service, and continuous improvement. Board members lead with a vision and make sound decisions that result in quality outcomes and successful operations of board staff.

ACTIVITY SUMMARY

The Board's core functions include inspections of salons and schools, licensing of practitioners and establishments, and compliance enforcement for those who pose risks to the health and safety of Minnesotans. Board staff and members are also constantly evaluating legislation, rules and policies to promote efficient and reasonable regulation.

Meetings typically last: 4 hours
Meeting Frequency: The Board meets five to six times per year at 1000 University Avenue West, Suite 100, St. Paul, MN 55104. In addition to Board meetings, members are a part of one to three committees that also meet four to five times per year, lasting approximately four hours.
